JAMB Physics 1987 Question 23

Question 23

Change of State and Vapours

Calculate the amount of heat required to convert 2 kg of ice at −2°C to water at 0°C. (Specific heat capacity of ice = 2090 J kg−1 °C−1, specific latent heat of fusion of ice = 333 kJ kg−1).

  1. A.666 J
  2. B.8360 J
  3. C.666 000 J
  4. D.674 360 J.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (674 360 J.)

Explanation

Warming the ice: 2 × 2090 × 2 = 8360 J. Melting it: 2 × 333 000 = 666 000 J. Total = 674 360 J.
