Question 18

Temperature and Thermometers

The lower and upper fixed points marked on a mercury-in-glass thermometer are 210 mm apart. The end of the mercury column in the tube is 49 mm above the lower fixed point in a room. What is the temperature of the room in degrees Celsius?

  1. A.55.3°C
  2. B.23.3°C
  3. C.49.0°C
  4. D.16.1°C
  5. E.76.7°C
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (23.3°C)

Explanation

The 100 degrees span 210 mm, so 49 mm above the ice point is (49/210) × 100 ≈ 23.3°C.
