JAMB Physics 1979 Question 35

Question 35

Capacitors

A capacitor and a resistor are connected in series with each other and in series with an accumulator of negligible internal resistance. The potential difference across the terminals of the capacitor is

  1. A.twice the e.m.f. of the accumulator
  2. B.less than the e.m.f. by the potential drop across the resistor
  3. C.zero
  4. D.the same as the e.m.f.
  5. E.greater than the e.m.f.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (the same as the e.m.f.)

Explanation

Once the capacitor is fully charged no current flows, so there is no p.d. across the resistor and the capacitor's p.d. equals the e.m.f.
