JAMB Mathematics 2010 Question 37

Question 37

Coordinate Geometry

Find the equation of a line parallel to y = −4x + 2 passing through (2,3).

  1. A.y − 4x + 11 = 0
  2. B.y − 4x − 11 = 0
  3. C.y + 4x + 11 = 0
  4. D.y + 4x − 11 = 0
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (y + 4x − 11 = 0)

Explanation

A parallel line has gradient −4: y − 3 = −4(x − 2), so y = −4x + 11, i.e. y + 4x − 11 = 0.
