JAMB Mathematics 2004 Question 16

Question 16

Inequalities

The shaded area in the diagram above is represented by

Diagram for this question
  1. A.{(x,y) : y + 3x < 6}
  2. B.{(x,y) : y + 3x < −6}
  3. C.{(x,y) : y − 3x < 6}
  4. D.{(x,y) : y − 3x < −6}
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A ({(x,y) : y + 3x < 6})

Explanation

The line through (0, 6) and (2, 0) is y = −3x + 6, i.e. y + 3x = 6. The shaded side contains the origin, where y + 3x = 0 < 6.
