JAMB Mathematics 2003 Question 29

Question 29

Coordinate Geometry

Find the value of p, if the line which passes through (−1, −p) and (−2p, 2) is parallel to the line 2y + 8x − 17 = 0

  1. A.7/6
  2. B.6/7
  3. C.−2/7
  4. D.−6/7
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (6/7)

Explanation

The given line has gradient −4. So (2 + p)/(−2p + 1) = −4, giving 2 + p = −4 + 8p, 7p = 6 and p = 6/7.
