JAMB Mathematics 2002 Question 49

Question 49

Measures of Dispersion

Calculate the mean deviation of the set of numbers 7, 3, 14, 9, 7 and 8

  1. A.2⅙
  2. B.2½
  3. C.1⅙
  4. D.2⅓
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (2⅓)

Explanation

The mean is 48 ÷ 6 = 8. The distances from 8 are 1, 5, 6, 1, 1, 0, which add to 14. Mean deviation = 14 ÷ 6 = 2⅓.
