JAMB Mathematics 2001 Question 39

Question 39

Integration

Find the area bounded by the curves y = 4 − x2 and y = 2x + 1.

  1. A.10⅓ sq. units
  2. B.10⅔ sq. units
  3. C.20⅓ sq. units
  4. D.20⅔ sq. units
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (10⅔ sq. units)

Explanation

The curves meet where x2 + 2x − 3 = 0, i.e. x = −3 and 1. The area is ∫(3 − 2x − x2)dx from −3 to 1 = 5/3 − (−9) = 32/3 = 10⅔.
