JAMB Mathematics 2000 Question 3

Question 3

Surds

If (2√3 − √2)/(√3 + 2√2) = m + n√6, find the values of m and n respectively.

  1. A.1, −2
  2. B.−2, 1
  3. C.−2/5, 1
  4. D.2, 3/5
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (−2, 1)

Explanation

Multiply top and bottom by (√3 − 2√2): the top becomes 6 − 4√6 − √6 + 4 = 10 − 5√6 and the bottom 3 − 8 = −5. So the value is −2 + √6, giving m = −2 and n = 1.
