JAMB Mathematics 1997 Question 32

Question 32

Loci

A point P moves so that it is equidistant from point L and M. If LM is 16cm, find the distance of P from LM when P is 10cm from L.

  1. A.12cm
  2. B.10cm
  3. C.8cm
  4. D.6cm
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (6cm)

Explanation

P lies on the perpendicular bisector of LM, 8 cm from L along LM. By Pythagoras the distance is √(10² − 8²) = 6 cm.
