JAMB Mathematics 1997 Question 12

Question 12

Linear and Simultaneous Equations

Solve the simultaneous equations 2/x − 3/y = 2, 4/x + 3/y = 10

  1. A.x = 3/2, y = 1/2
  2. B.x = 1/2, y = 3/2
  3. C.x = −1/2, y = −3/2
  4. D.x = 1/2, y = −3/2
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (x = 1/2, y = 3/2)

Explanation

Adding the equations gives 6/x = 12, so x = 1/2. Then 4/x = 8, so 3/y = 2 and y = 3/2.
