JAMB Mathematics 1995 Question 29

Question 29

Latitude and Longitude

Find the distance between two towns P(45°N, 30°W) and Q(15°S, 30°W) if the radius of the earth is 7 000km. (π = 22/7)

  1. A.1 100/3
  2. B.2 200/3
  3. C.22 000/3
  4. D.11 000/3
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C (22 000/3)

Explanation

Both towns are on longitude 30°W, so the angle between them is 45° + 15° = 60°. Distance = 60/360 × 2 × 22/7 × 7000 = 44 000/6 = 22 000/3 km.
