Question 35

Mensuration of Plane Shapes

In the figure above, the area of the square PQRS is 100cm2. If the ratio of the area of the square TUYS to the area of the square XQVU is 1 : 16, find YR.

Diagram for this question
  1. A.6cm
  2. B.7cm
  3. C.8cm
  4. D.9cm
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C (8cm)

Explanation

The big square has side 10cm. Areas 1 : 16 mean sides 1 : 4, so the small squares have sides a and 4a with a + 4a = 10, giving a = 2. YR = 10 − 2 = 8cm.
