JAMB Mathematics 1993 Question 33

Question 33

Triangles and Quadrilaterals

The three sides of an isosceles triangle are of length x + 3, 2x + 3, 2x − 3 respectively. Calculate x.

  1. A.0
  2. B.1
  3. C.3
  4. D.6
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (6)

Explanation

Two sides must be equal. x + 3 = 2x − 3 gives x = 6 (sides 9, 15, 9, a real triangle). x + 3 = 2x + 3 gives x = 0, which makes a side negative, so x = 6.
