JAMB Mathematics 1993 Question 21

Question 21

Inequalities

If x is negative, what is the range of value of x within which (x + 1)/3 > 1/(x + 3)

  1. A.3 < x < 4
  2. B.−4 < x < −3
  3. C.−2 < x < −1
  4. D.−3 < x < 0
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (−4 < x < −3)

Explanation

(x + 1)/3 − 1/(x + 3) = x(x + 4)/(3(x + 3)) > 0. Checking signs between the critical values −4, −3 and 0, the only negative interval that works is −4 < x < −3.
