Question 6

Mensuration of Plane Shapes

If the length of a square is increased by 20% while its width is decreased by 20% to form a rectangle, what is the ratio of the area of the rectangle to the area of the square?

  1. A.6:5
  2. B.25:24
  3. C.5:6
  4. D.24:25
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (24:25)

Explanation

If the side is 1, the rectangle is 1.2 by 0.8, with area 0.96. The ratio is 0.96 : 1 = 24 : 25.
