JAMB Mathematics 1987 Question 32

Question 32

Triangles and Quadrilaterals

In the diagram above, QR||TS, QR:TS = 2:3. Find the ratio of the area of triangle PQR to the area of the trapezium QRST.

Diagram for this question
  1. A.4:9
  2. B.4:5
  3. C.1:3
  4. D.2:3
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (4:5)

Explanation

Triangles PQR and PTS are similar with sides in ratio 2:3, so their areas are in ratio 4:9. The trapezium is 9 − 4 = 5 parts, so the ratio is 4:5.
