Question 3

Fractions, Decimals and Approximation

A rectangular lawn has an area of 1815 square yards. If its length is 50 metres, find its width in metres, given that 1 metre equals 1.1 yards.

  1. A.39.93
  2. B.35.00
  3. C.33.00
  4. D.30.00
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (30.00)

Explanation

1 m = 1.1 yd, so 1 m² = 1.1 × 1.1 = 1.21 sq yd. The area is 1815 ÷ 1.21 = 1500 m², so the width is 1500 ÷ 50 = 30 m.
