Question 6

Ratio, Percentages and Rates

Three boys shared some oranges. The first received 1/3 of the oranges, the second received 2/3 of the remainder. If the third boy received the remaining 12 oranges, how many oranges did they share?

  1. A.60
  2. B.54
  3. C.48
  4. D.42.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (54)

Explanation

After the first boy, ⅔ of the oranges remain. The second takes ⅔ of that, leaving ⅓ × ⅔ = 2/9 for the third boy. 2/9 of the total = 12, so the total is 54.
