JAMB Mathematics 1985 Question 13

Question 13

Quadratic Equations

Find the values of p for which the equation x2 − (p − 2)x + 2p + 1 = 0 has equal roots.

  1. A.(0, 12)
  2. B.(1, 2)
  3. C.(21, 0)
  4. D.(4, 5)
  5. E.(3, 4).
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A ((0, 12))

Explanation

Equal roots need b² = 4ac: (p − 2)² = 4(2p + 1), i.e. p² − 12p = 0, so p = 0 or 12.
