A straight line y = mx meets the curve y = x2 − 12x + 40 in two distinct points. If one of them is (5,5) find the other.

Explanation

(5,5) on y = mx gives m = 1. Then x = x² − 12x + 40, i.e. x² − 13x + 40 = 0, so x = 5 or 8. The other point is (8,8).
