Question 12

Number Bases

A trader in a country where their currency 'MONT' (M) is in base five bought 103(5) oranges at M14(5) each, what will be his gain? If he sells them at M24 each

  1. A.M103(5)
  2. B.M1030(5)
  3. C.M102(5)
  4. D.M2002(5)
  5. E.M3032(5)
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (M1030(5))

Explanation

In base ten: 103₅ = 28 oranges, 14₅ = 9 and 24₅ = 14, so the gain is 28 × 5 = 140. In base five 140 = 1030₅.
