Question 4

Linear and Simultaneous Equations

Solve the following equations
4x − 3 = 3x + y = 2y + 5x − 12

  1. A.x = 5, y = 2
  2. B.x = 2, y = 5
  3. C.x = −2, y = −5
  4. D.x = 5, y = −2
  5. E.x = −5, y = −2.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A (x = 5, y = 2)

Explanation

4x − 3 = 3x + y gives x − y = 3. 3x + y = 2y + 5x − 12 gives 2x + y = 12. Adding: 3x = 15, so x = 5 and y = 2.
