JAMB Mathematics 1981 Question 21

Question 21

Triangles and Quadrilaterals

In ΔXYZ, XY = 3cm, XZ = 5cm and YZ = 7cm. If the bisector of XYZ meets XZ at W, what is the length of XW?

  1. A.1.5cm
  2. B.2.5cm
  3. C.3cm
  4. D.4cm
  5. E.None of the above.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A (1.5cm)

Explanation

The angle bisector divides XZ in the ratio of the adjacent sides: XW : WZ = 3 : 7. So XW = 3/10 × 5 = 1.5cm.
