JAMB Mathematics 1979 Question 5

Question 5

Triangles and Quadrilaterals

In PQR. PQ = 10cm, QR = 8cm and RP = 6cm, the perpendicular RS is drawn from R to PQ. Find the length of RS.

  1. A.4cm
  2. B.3√2cm
  3. C.10/7
  4. D.49/7
  5. E.4.8cm
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: E (4.8cm)

Explanation

6² + 8² = 10², so the triangle is right-angled at R and its area is ½ × 6 × 8 = 24. Then ½ × 10 × RS = 24 gives RS = 4.8cm.
