JAMB Mathematics 1979 Question 27

Question 27

Inequalities

Which of the values of the variable x, (a) x = 0, (b) x = −3, (c) x = 9, satisfy the inequalities 0 < (x + 3)/(x − 1) ≤ 2?

  1. A.(a), (b), (c)
  2. B.(b), (c) only
  3. C.(c) only
  4. D.None of (a), (b), (c)
  5. E.None of the choices (A) to (D) above.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C ((c) only)

Explanation

x = 0 gives −3 (not positive), x = −3 gives 0 (not greater than 0) and x = 9 gives 12/8 = 1.5, which lies in the range. So only (c).
