JAMB Economics 1997 Question 5

Question 5

Population

Given that at the beginning of 1973, Nigeria with a birth rate of 3% per annum had a population of 75 million. This implied that in that year

  1. A.the population increased by 2.25 million
  2. B.there were 2.25 million live births
  3. C.the government have to make provisions for 2.25 million children
  4. D.2.25 million children were born.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (there were 2.25 million live births)

Explanation

Birth rate measures live births: 3% of 75 million = 2.25 million live births. The population grows by births minus deaths, so it did not necessarily rise by 2.25 million.
