JAMB Chemistry 2009 Question 1

Question 1

Separation of Mixtures

A mixture of sugar and sulphur can be separated by

  1. A.dissolution in water, evaporation and filtration
  2. B.filtration, evaporation and dissolution in water
  3. C.dissolution in water, filtration and evaporation
  4. D.evaporation, dissolution in water and filtration
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C (dissolution in water, filtration and evaporation)

Explanation

Sugar dissolves in water but sulphur does not. Dissolve, filter off the sulphur, then evaporate the filtrate to recover the sugar.
