JAMB Chemistry 2006 Question 23

Question 23

Mole Concept and Stoichiometry

One mole of a hydrocarbon contains 36g of carbon and its vapour density is 20. The structure of the hydrocarbon is

  1. A.CH3C≡CH
  2. B.CH3CH=CH2
  3. C.CH3CH2C≡CH
  4. D.CH3CH2CH3
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A (CH3C≡CH)

Explanation

Molar mass = 2 × 20 = 40 g. 36 g C = 3 mol C, leaving 4 g = 4 H, so the formula is C3H4, propyne CH3C≡CH.
