JAMB Chemistry 1999 Question 1

Question 1

Mole Concept and Stoichiometry

200 cm3 each of 0.1 M solutions of lead (II) trioxonitrate (V) and hydrochloric acid were mixed. Assuming that lead (II) chloride is completely insoluble, calculate the mass of lead (II) chloride that will be precipitated. [Pb = 207, Cl = 35.5, N = 14, O = 16].

  1. A.2.78 g
  2. B.5.56 g
  3. C.8.34 g
  4. D.11.12 g
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A (2.78 g)

Explanation

Each solution has 0.2 × 0.1 = 0.02 mol. Pb2+ + 2Cl− → PbCl2, so the 0.02 mol of Cl− makes only 0.01 mol of PbCl2. Mass = 0.01 × 278 = 2.78 g.
