JAMB Chemistry 1998 Question 2

Question 2

Separation of Mixtures

A mixture of iron and sulphur can be separated by dissolving the mixture in

  1. A.steam
  2. B.dilute hydrochloric acid
  3. C.dilute sodium hydroxide
  4. D.benzene
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (benzene)

Explanation

Sulphur dissolves in organic solvents such as benzene (or carbon disulphide) but iron does not, so the sulphur can be dissolved away and the iron filtered off. Dilute HCl would react with the iron instead of separating it.
