JAMB Chemistry 1993 Question 39

Question 39

Hydrogen, Oxygen and Oxides

Al2O3(s) + 3H2SO4(aq) → Al2(SO4)3(aq) + 3H2O(l)
Al2O3(s) + 2NaOH(aq) + 3H2O(l) → 2NaAl(OH)4(aq)
We can conclude from the equations above that Al2O3 is

  1. A.an acidic oxide
  2. B.an amphoteric oxide
  3. C.a basic oxide
  4. D.a neutral oxide
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (an amphoteric oxide)

Explanation

Al2O3 reacts with both an acid and an alkali to form salts. An oxide that behaves as both acid and base is amphoteric.
