JAMB Chemistry 1987 Question 48

Question 48

Alkanols

Complete oxidation of propan –1–ol gives

  1. A.propanal
  2. B.propan–2–al
  3. C.propan–1–one
  4. D.propanoic acid
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (propanoic acid)

Explanation

A primary alkanol is first oxidised to an alkanal, then fully to the alkanoic acid. Propan-1-ol therefore ends up as propanoic acid.
