JAMB Chemistry 1986 Question 12

Question 12

Acids, Bases and Salts

Which of the following salts when dissolved in water will NOT give the corresponding pH value?

  1. A.NaHSO4, pH < 5
  2. B.Na2CO3, pH > 8
  3. C.Na2Cl, pH = 7
  4. D.NaHCO3, pH < 6.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (NaHCO3, pH < 6.)

Explanation

Sodium hydrogencarbonate solution is mildly alkaline (pH about 8), so pH < 6 is wrong. NaHSO4 is acidic, Na2CO3 is alkaline and NaCl is neutral.
