Question 34

Solubility and Solutions

The solubility curve of a solid X (molecular mass = 160) is as shown below. 1,000 cm3 of a saturated solution of X at 80°C is cooled to 40°C. The weight of X crystalized out would be

Diagram for this question
  1. A.10 g
  2. B.12 g
  3. C.14 g
  4. D.16 g
  5. E.18 g
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (16 g)

Explanation

From the graph the solubility is 0.4 mol/dm3 at 80°C and 0.3 mol/dm3 at 40°C. The 0.1 mol that comes out of 1 dm3 weighs 0.1 × 160 = 16 g.
