JAMB Chemistry 1980 Question 22

Question 22

Volumetric Analysis

20 cm3 of 1 M H2SO4 is mixed with 20 cm3 of 1 M NaOH. The resulting solution is

  1. A.acidic with a molarity of 0.50 M H2SO4
  2. B.acidic with a molarity of 0.25 M H2SO4
  3. C.neutral
  4. D.alkaline with a molarity of 0.25M NaOH
  5. E.alkaline with a molarity of 0.50 M NaOH.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (acidic with a molarity of 0.25 M H2SO4)

Explanation

0.02 mol NaOH neutralises 0.01 mol of the 0.02 mol H2SO4 (2NaOH + H2SO4). 0.01 mol acid is left in 40 cm3, i.e. 0.01 ÷ 0.040 = 0.25 M.
