Question 6

Volumetric Analysis

In the reaction between sodium hydroxide and sulphuric acid solutions, what volume of 0.5 molar sodium hydroxide would exactly neutralise 10cm3 of 1.25 molar sulphuric acid?

  1. A.5cm3
  2. B.10cm3
  3. C.20cm3
  4. D.25cm3
  5. E.50cm3
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: E (50cm3)

Explanation

2NaOH + H2SO4 → Na2SO4 + 2H2O. Moles of acid = 0.010 × 1.25 = 0.0125, so NaOH needed = 0.025 mol. Volume = 0.025 ÷ 0.5 = 0.05 dm3 = 50 cm3.
