GCE Mathematics 1989 Question 44

Question 44

Trigonometry

The angle of depression of a point on the ground from the top of a building is 20.3°. If the distance from the point to the foot of the building is 40m, calculate the height of the building, correct to one decimal place.

  1. A.37.5m
  2. B.28.1m
  3. C.27.8m
  4. D.14.8m
  5. E.13.9m
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (14.8m)

Explanation

The angle of elevation of the top from the point is also 20.3°, so height = 40 tan 20.3° = 40 × 0.3699 = 14.8 m.
