Japanese ship building: long indented coast with deep sheltered harbours; steel industry nearby; skilled, hard-working labour; advanced technology and automation; huge demand from Japanese shipping and world orders; government support and capital
Eastern USA chemicals: petroleum, natural gas, salt and sulphur; plenty of water; power; skilled labour; large market; capital and research
British textiles: early start (Industrial Revolution); coal for steam power; soft water (Lancashire, Yorkshire); damp climate for spinning cotton; wool from sheep and imported cotton through Liverpool; skilled labour; large home and colonial markets
