Theory question 107
Spiritual GiftsWhat did Paul teach concerning the use of individual talents? In what two ways can this teaching be applied to christians living today?
Show the model answer
There are varieties of gifts but the same Spirit, varieties of service but the same Lord (1 Corinthians 12:4-6).
Each is given a gift of the Spirit for the common good (1 Corinthians 12:7).
Gifts include wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues and interpretation, given as the Spirit wills (1 Corinthians 12:8-11).
Like parts of one body, every member is needed; none should despise another or feel useless (1 Corinthians 12:12-26).
We have gifts that differ according to grace and should use them: prophecy in proportion to faith, service, teaching, exhortation, giving with liberality, leading with zeal, mercy with cheerfulness (Romans 12:4-8).
All gifts should be used in love (1 Corinthians 13:1-3) and for building up the church (1 Corinthians 14:12, 26).
Application (any two): use talents in church service (choir, teaching, ushering); use skills to help the needy and community; avoid pride or envy over gifts; cooperate with others in team work; develop and not neglect one's talents.
Explain the teaching with references, then two applications.
