Theory question 103
Reproduction in Plants(a) Describe how the floral parts of a named flower are adapted to wind-pollination
(b) Explain how each of the following behaviours in animals affect the reproduction process (i) territoriality (ii) display (iii) seasonal migration.
Show the model answer
(a) Named flower e.g. maize or grass: small, dull petals or none; no scent or nectar; long filaments with anthers hanging outside the flower; large amounts of light, dry, smooth pollen; long feathery stigmas hanging out to catch pollen
(b)(i) Territoriality: the male defends an area with food and nest sites; attracts females, spaces out breeding pairs and ensures enough food for the young
(ii) Display: colours, songs, dances or postures that attract a mate, bring the sexes together and get them ready for mating
(iii) Seasonal migration: animals move to suitable breeding grounds (e.g. salmon, birds) where conditions and food favour mating and survival of the young
Name the flower first, then describe each floral part.
