Theory question 110
Nigeria: People and Economy(a) Draw a sketch map of Nigeria to show (i) the home areas of the following people: Fulani, Ibibio, Yoruba and Urhobo (ii) one major town in each home area
(b) Select any two of these peoples and explain the effects of the physical environment on their occupation and types of house
Show the model answer
(a) Fulani – northern Nigeria (Sokoto/Kano/Yola); Ibibio – south-east, Akwa Ibom (Uyo); Yoruba – south-west (Ibadan); Urhobo – Delta State (Warri/Ughelli)
(b) Any two, e.g.:
Fulani: savanna grassland with few tsetse flies favours cattle rearing and nomadic or semi-nomadic herding; houses are light, temporary round huts of grass and poles, easy to move; settled Fulani build round mud houses with thatched roofs suited to the hot dry climate
Yoruba: forest and derived savanna with fertile soils favour farming (cocoa, yam, kola), crafts and trading; houses of mud or blocks with thatch or iron roofs, often in large compounds and towns
Urhobo/Ibibio: wet, swampy delta and forest – fishing, palm oil production, farming; houses of mud/wood and raffia palm thatch, sometimes raised on stilts near water
Explain how climate and vegetation shape each occupation and house.
