Theory question 102
National IncomeSection A (data response: answer one question only from this section)
The following table shows the population and the Gross National Product (GNP) of countries R, S, T, U and V in 1980. Use the information in the table to answer the questions that follow:
Countries | Population (in Million) | Gross National Product (in Million Dollars)
R | 120 | 2,500
S | 180 | 12,000
T | 60 | 4,000
U | 100 | 6,500
V | 25 | 2,500
(a)(i) Calculate the per capita incomes of countries R, S, T, U and V. (ii) Determine the range of the per capita incomes of the five countries. (iii) Which one of the countries enjoyed the highest standard of living?
(b) Express the population of each of countries R, S, T, U and V as a percentage of the total population of all the countries.
(c) Draw a simple bar chart showing all the countries and their respective per capita incomes.
Show the model answer
(a)(i) Per capita income = GNP ÷ population: R = 2,500 ÷ 120 = $20.83; S = 12,000 ÷ 180 = $66.67; T = 4,000 ÷ 60 = $66.67; U = 6,500 ÷ 100 = $65.00; V = 2,500 ÷ 25 = $100.00.
(ii) Range = 100.00 − 20.83 = $79.17.
(iii) Country V (highest per capita income).
(b) Total population = 120 + 180 + 60 + 100 + 25 = 485 million. R = 120/485 × 100 = 24.74%; S = 37.11%; T = 12.37%; U = 20.62%; V = 5.15%.
(c) Bar chart: countries R–V on the horizontal axis, per capita income ($) on the vertical axis, with a title, a suitable scale and bars of equal width and spacing at heights 20.83, 66.67, 66.67, 65 and 100.
Millions cancel out, so per capita income is in dollars.
