WAEC Economics 1997 Theory question 101

Theory question 101

Population

Section A: answer one question only from this section.
The data below shows an hypothetical age distribution of the population of a town in Nigeria.
Age 10 and below: male 1350; female 2650; total 4000
Age 11 – 14: male 2275; female 2725; total X
Age 15 – 35: male 1135; female 1365; total 2500
Age 36 – 64: male Y; female 4265; total 7500
Age 65 and above: male 3250; female Z; total 6000
From the above data calculate: (a) X, Y, Z (b) The total population of the town (c) the difference between the population of male and female aged 14 and below (d) The percentage of the population aged 14 and below (e) the dependency ratio in the town.

Model answer

(a) X = 2275 + 2725 = 5000
Y = 7500 − 4265 = 3235
Z = 6000 − 3250 = 2750
(b) Total = 4000 + 5000 + 2500 + 7500 + 6000 = 25,000
(c) Males aged 14 and below = 1350 + 2275 = 3625; females = 2650 + 2725 = 5375; difference = 5375 − 3625 = 1750
(d) Aged 14 and below = 4000 + 5000 = 9000; 9000/25,000 × 100 = 36%
(e) Dependants = aged 14 and below + aged 65 and above = 9000 + 6000 = 15,000
Working population (15–64) = 2500 + 7500 = 10,000
Dependency ratio = 15,000 : 10,000 = 3 : 2 (1.5)

Explanation

Dependants are those aged 14 and below plus those 65 and above; the working population is 15–64.
