(a) State five objectives of establishing the Economic Community of West African States.
(b) Give five reasons why the Lake Chad Basin Commission was established.

(a) Any five: to promote economic co-operation and integration among member states; to remove customs duties and other trade barriers between members; to establish a common external tariff (customs union); to allow free movement of people, goods, services and capital; to develop transport and communication links in the region; to harmonise agricultural, industrial and monetary policies; to raise the standard of living of the people; to promote peace and stability.
(b) Any five: to manage and share the waters of Lake Chad fairly among member states; to develop agriculture, irrigation and fisheries in the basin; to control the drying up of the lake, desertification and environmental damage; to promote joint projects (roads, livestock development); to encourage trade and co-operation among Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon; to settle disputes over the use of the basin; to control pests and diseases (e.g. tsetse fly).
