Theory question 104
DiscipleshipSection B (Themes from the Four Gospels and Acts of the Apostles)
What instructions were given to the twelve disciples before they set out on their mission? Mention any four differences that are notable in the accounts of Matthew and Mark.
Show the model answer
Jesus gave them authority over unclean spirits and to heal every disease (Matthew 10:1; Mark 6:7).
Go not to the Gentiles or Samaritans but to the lost sheep of Israel (Matthew 10:5-6).
Preach that the kingdom of heaven is at hand; heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons; freely you received, freely give (Matthew 10:7-8).
Take no gold, silver or copper, no bag, no two tunics (Matthew 10:9-10; Mark 6:8-9).
Stay with a worthy person in each town; greet the house with peace (Matthew 10:11-13; Mark 6:10).
Where they are not received, shake off the dust from their feet as a testimony (Matthew 10:14; Mark 6:11).
Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves; they will face persecution, but the Spirit will speak through them (Matthew 10:16-20).
Differences (any four): Mark says they were sent two by two (Mark 6:7); Mark allows a staff and sandals, Matthew forbids a staff and sandals (Mark 6:8-9; Matthew 10:10); only Matthew limits them to Israel and excludes Gentiles and Samaritans; only Matthew lists the twelve names at the mission; Matthew includes raising the dead and the longer warnings about persecution; Mark records that they preached repentance and anointed the sick with oil (Mark 6:12-13).
List the instructions, then four clear differences between Matthew 10 and Mark 6.
