Theory question 107
Animal NutritionWrite short notes on four food nutrients of livestock under the following headings: (a) composition (b) sources (c) functions.
Show the model answer
Any four:
Carbohydrates: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen; maize, cassava, guinea corn, molasses, grass; supply energy
Proteins: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen (some sulphur, phosphorus); fish meal, groundnut cake, soya bean meal, blood meal; growth, repair, production of eggs and milk
Fats and oils: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen; oilseeds, palm kernel cake, cotton seed; concentrated energy, body heat, carry fat-soluble vitamins
Minerals: elements such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium, iron; bone meal, oyster shell, salt lick, limestone; bones, teeth, eggshell, blood formation, body regulation
Vitamins: organic compounds (A, B, D, E, K); green forage, fish oil, premix; protect against deficiency diseases and regulate body processes
Water: hydrogen and oxygen; drinking water, succulent feed; transport of nutrients, temperature control
For each nutrient give composition, one or two sources and its main function.
