Question 7

Quadratic Equations

The solution of the quadratic equation bx2 + cx + a = 0, is given by

  1. A.x = (−c ± √(c2 − 4ab))/2b
  2. B.x = (−b ± √(b2 − 4ac))/2a
  3. C.x = (c ± √(b2 − 4ac))/2b
  4. D.x = (b ± √(b2 + 4ac))/2a
  5. E.x = c ± √(c2 − 4ab)/2b
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A (x = (−c ± √(c2 − 4ab))/2b)

Explanation

In the usual formula the coefficient of x² is now b, of x is c, and the constant is a. So x = (−c ± √(c² − 4ab))/2b.
